Shaping the Top II


The arching on different models varies considerably. While French instruments have the curve of the arch run right out to the edge, German models often have violin-like flutings along the edges. English viols are often made in a totally different way. Their tops are made of 3-5 strips of wood, which are bent and then joined together.
