Thinning the Top The thickness of the top plate is determined using little violinmakers' planes. Again, various models require different approaches to thicknessing. French instruments often have the same thickness all over, German models are strongest in the center, thinning towards the edges. The belly of a viol is approx. 3.5 - 5 mm thick, depending on the model.
